The ship was named for United States Marine Corps Lieutenant General Frank E. Petersen Jr. the first African-American Marine Corps aviator and the first African-American Marine Corps general.
In 2026, CSG-3 had been deployed to the Middle East following tensions between Iran and the US.

USS Mahan (DDG-72) is an Arleigh Burke-class (Flight II) Aegis guided missile destroyer currently in service with the United States Navy and is the first of the Flight II variant.
USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG-81) is an Arleigh Burke-class (Flight IIA) Aegis guided missile destroyer of the United States Navy.
She is named after Sir Winston Churchill, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
USS Bainbridge (DDG-96) is an Arleigh Burke-class (Flight IIA) Aegis guided missile destroyer in the United States Navy.
She is the fifth ship to carry the name. Bainbridge is named in honor of Commodore William Bainbridge, who as commander of the frigate USS Constitution distinguished himself in the War of 1812 when he and his crew captured HMS Java, a 38-gun fifth-rate frigate of the Royal Navy.

USS Mason (DDG-87) is an Arleigh Burke-class (Flight IIA) Aegis guided-missile destroyer in the United States Navy.
She is named in honor of the black crewmembers who served on board USS Mason (DE-529) during the period of racial segregation in the United States Armed Forces.
USS Ross (DDG-71) is an Arleigh Burke-class (Flight I) Aegis guided missile destroyer in the United States Navy and is the last of the Flight I variant.
She is the second Navy ship to be named Ross, the first Navy ship named for Medal of Honor recipient Donald K. Ross.
The first Ross, DD-563, was named for David Ross, a captain in the Continental Navy.
On 31 March 2026, Carrier Strike Group 10 departed Naval Station Norfolk for deployment to the Middle East, following ongoing combat operations by the US towards Iran.
