В состав ВМС США вошла шестая атомная подводная лодка типа «Вирджиния» SSN 779 USS «New Mexico»

Американская компания Northrop Grumman поставила поставку АПЛ военно-морским силам США на четыре месяца раньше намеченного срока. Строительство АПЛ «New Mexico » продолжалось 70 месяцев – это самый короткий срок за всю историю создания таких лодок.

New Mexico is the sixth ship of the Virginia class and is in the final stages of construction and testing at the company’s Newport News shipyard. Delivery to the Navy is scheduled by the end of this year. The keel for New Mexico was authenticated April 12, 2008. The ship was christened on Dec. 13, 2008. New Mexico is named for “The Land of Enchantment.” Upon delivery to the Navy this year, it will be the most modern and sophisticated attack submarine in the world, providing undersea supremacy well into the 21st century.

Водоизмещение субмарины составляет 7,9 тысячи тонн, а длина корпуса – 115 метров. Подлодка способна развивать скорость до 25 узлов. SSN 779 имеет четыре торпедных аппарата калибра 533 миллиметра, а также 12 ракетных шахт для ракет BGM-109 «Томагавк».

В декабре 2009 года лодка завершила морские испытания и вернулась на верфь в городе Ньюпорт-Ньюс. В ходе морских испытаний АПЛ проходила проверку скоростных характеристик, бортовых систем, а также осуществляла погружение.

В общей сложности Northrop Grumman должна построить 18 подводных лодок типа «Вирджиния». Позже число АПЛ может быть увеличено до 30 единиц – именно столько планируют закупить ВМС США

NEW MEXICO is the Navy’s 6th Virginia-class fast-attack submarine in the initial contract for 10 subs. On December 22, 2008, the Navy awarded a new $14B contract to the GDEB/NGC team for eight more VA-class subs, the first of which will be NORTH DAKOTA. Beginning in 2011, the Navy will double the current production rate by building two subs per year. The new contract calls for construction times of 60 months and costs to be held at $2B each (in 2005 dollars). The first 11 VA-class have been named and seven still need to be named.
