The Ohio-class guided-missile submarine USS Florida (SSGN 728) arrives for a routine port visit to the island of Crete.

Florida is homeport in Naval Submarine Base, Kings Bay.

USS Florida (SSGN-728), an Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine, was the sixth ship of the United States Navy to be named for the 27th state.

Complement:15 officers,140 enlisted.

Armament:4 × 21-inch torpedo tubes,154 × BGM-109 Tomahawks in 22 groups of seven.



Florida's maiden SSGN deployment began in April 2008 and lasted for 13 months. During the deployment, Florida achieved numerous milestones for a SSGN, including the first SSGN to operate in the Mediterranean Sea, the first Trident-class submarine to transit the Suez Canal, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Strait of Hormuz.

Florida is the largest submarine ever to operate in the Persian Gulf and visits to Gibraltar, Jebel Ali, Souda Bay, and Diego Garcia.

As a SSGN, Florida is configured to perform precision strikes among duties.
