The nuclear powered attack submarine USS Virginia (SSN 774)

Атомная подводная лодка USS Virginia (SSN 774)  является шестым кораблем ВМС США, носящим имя первой английской колонии (Вирджиния) и 10-го американского штата.

USS Virginia (SSN 774) (экипаж 13 офицеров и 121 военнослужащих по контракту) была введена в эксплуатацию 23 октября 2004 и является головной в серии атомных противолодочных подводных лодок. Предназначена в т.ч. для специальных операций, разведки и наблюдения, минной войны.

Virginia was built under a teaming arrangement between General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, Conn., and Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding-Newport News, Va.

She is the sixth U.S. Navy vessel to bear the name of the first English colony and the 10th American state.

Virginia was commissioned Oct. 23, 2004 and is the first of the newest class of nuclear-powered attack submarines, built to excel in anti-submarine warfare; anti-ship warfare; strike warfare; special operations; intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance; irregular warfare; and mine warfare missions.

Adept at operating in both the world's shallow littoral regions and deep waters, Virginia directly enables five of the six Navy Maritime Strategy core capabilities — sea control, power projection, forward presence, maritime security, and deterrence.

U.S. Naval Academy Midshipmen and Sailors assigned to the Virginia-class attack submarine USS Virginia (SSN 774) participate in a swim call in the Atlantic Ocean. 

The Midshipmen are aboard Virginia for a first-hand experience of the inner-workings of the submarine and the submarine community.

16 июня 2010 г. экипаж АПЛ в военно-морской базе New London посетила мисс Вирджиния Chinah Helmandollar (на фото). 

Мисс Вирджиния провела автограф-сессию для экипажа, осмотрела корабль, была приглашена к столу командиром АПЛ.

Helmandollar является 23-летней выпускницей Университета Джеймса Мэдисона, где она получила степень в театре. Она была удостоена стипендии Стратфорд для актеров театра и стипендии Дэвида Уилсона за выдающиеся достижения в театре.

Miss Virginia visited her commonwealth's namesake submarine June 16 at the vessel's homeport at Naval Submarine Base New London.

Helmandollar is a 23 year-old graduate of James Madison University where she earned a degree in theatre. She was the recipient of the Stratford Players Scholarship for theatre and the David Wilson Scholarship for excellence in theatre.

Electric Boat Corporation of Connecticut is the lead design authority for the New Attack Submarine. 

The building of the first Virginia-class submarine started in 1998, four of this class are currently scheduled for construction, USS Virginia (SSN 774), USS Texas (SSN 775), USS Hawaii (SSN 776) and USS North Carolina (SSN 777). Virginia is scheduled to be commissioned in June 2004.
